My Natural Remedies for Headaches

While this post is for everyone and anyone that suffers from headaches, it was inspired during my pregnancy (which is my current situation). I have been a advil/tylenol/motrin user for headaches basically my whole life. I am trying my very very hardest to have a drug free, healthy pregnancy and that includes not taking any tylenol (despite the fact that it is technically “safe” to take tylenol while pregnant).

I have been a huge believer that there is a natural alternative for basically everything and that drugs can (and should) be avoided for nearly everything, with one exception: headaches. I’m not sure why, but I have always just popped an advil or two when the rare headache would happen and I wouldn’t think twice about it. So when I started to get headaches during my pregnancy (around week 13), I was determined to find alternatives to tylenol BUT I found almost no information (I’m not the best at research though) and ended up having to take tylenol (I HATE to admit that, ugh). The headaches were AWFUL, like worst hangover of your life AWFUL and at this point, I needed to get back to work so badly that I had no choice but to take the dreaded drug and move on.

It wasn’t until I met with a midwife for the first time and did some further research that I discovered two really AMAZING and helpful remedies for headaches. THANK GOODNESS!!! I no longer need to take any tylenol and this modern ‘hippie’ mama is very happy 🙂


I have found caffeine, aka COFFEE, to be the best and most helpful remedy for my DAILY MORNING HEADACHES (ugh). Seriously, I wake up every morning with a headache. I always make sure to chug water the minute I wake up and then it’s COFFEE time. My husband and I make a batch of freshly ground organic coffee, I pour myself a cup, add some Califia Farms Coconut Almond Milk and slowly sip my away headache. I only need to drink one cup and by the time I reach the bottom, my headache is gone!!!! SOME people say that you shouldn’t drink caffeine while pregnant, while others recommend no more than two cups per day. I say, if one cup of coffee will help with my headaches instead of taking tylenol, I will take that risk and enjoy myself!

Peppermint Essential Oil

Our midwife (LOVE HER), recommended I try peppermint essential oil for the headaches that happen during the middle of the day or at night (since I can’t drink any more coffee). After the appointment, I quickly drove to Whole Foods and purchased this Aura Cacia Organic Peppermint Essential Oil. The VERY NEXT DAY, I had a headache at night and was excited to try the oil. I swiped a small amount across my forehead, laid down and let the oil work it’s MAGIC and it did!! Now the minute a headache comes on, I reach for the oil and within minutes my it is gone.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!!

I hope this goes without saying but I’m gonna say it anyways, HYDRATE!! Making sure that you are getting PLENTLY of water is key to avoiding, preventing and getting rid of headaches. To make sure you are getting enough water, I ALWAYS carry around a GIANT bottle of water (stainless steel or glass, please no plastic!) and make sure to fill it up multiple times a day. A good way to know you are drinking plenty of water is if you pee a lot and pee clear 🙂
